Moremi Crossing

One of the largest camps in the Okavango Delta, Moremi Crossing has been built on a palm fringed island overlooking Chief’s Island. While not as intimate as many camps, Moremi Crossing boasts a lovely location and is one of the most affordable camps in the Okavango. The focus here is on walking and water activities. No game drives are offered unless water levels are extremely low.

Moremi Crossing has sixteen en suite tents on raised decks, each with their own veranda, set along the fringes of the riverine forest. The tents are smaller than average and are simply but comfortably set up. Each has a veranda with chair and table outside, inside is the bedroom with a bathroom at the backing, leading to an outside shower. The honeymoon tent has an outside bathtub. The camp has a family which has two bedrooms and a shared bathroom.

The crescent-shaped main building consists of a very large open plan deck with lovely views over the Boro River onto Chief’s Island providing feeling of space. The dining room, bar and lounge are covered by a large thatched roof and includes various smaller areas which have been created for comfort and privacy. Moremi Crossing also has a small curio shop.

Situated on the edge of the Moremi Game Reserve, Moremi Crossing offers the traditional activities of a water based camp, with mokoro excursions and boat cruises offered when water levels permit. Additionally Moremi Crossing offers walking and island camping.

Mokoro excursions give guests a sedate way to experience the Okavango Delta at a pace which allows guests to absorb the scenery.

Bush walks at Moremi Crossing are conducted on surrounding islands provide an exhilarating way of viewing undisturbed game under the supervision of a qualified guide. These walks allow the guide the opportunity to point out details often missed on vehicle borne safaris. Game walks take place in the Moremi Game Reserve, one of the few camps able to offer this experience. However it is important to note this means your guide is not permitted to carry firearms and is only armed with bear bangers.

Motor boat excursions provide a way of exploring the channels of the Okavango Delta’s Boro River as it slowly flows towards Maun. Motor Boats allow guests to travel further afield experiencing the breadth of the Okavango Delta.

Additionally Gunn’s Camp offer wilderness camping- a truly authentic sleep out experience. The camp will pack your mokoro with basic camping equipment and food and you will set out with your guide and find a nearby island to camp on. The evening will be spent preparing dinner around the campfire in the company of Africa’s nocturnal wildlife.

During times of extremely low water levels, when flood levels have been low and local rains poor, which mean mokoro and boating cannot be operated, then 4×4 game drives will be offered.

Finally, for those interested in learning more about the cultural side of the Okavango, a village visit can be arranged, offering a glimpse into the traditional life of the local BaYei people.

Moremi Crossings is set on the Gunns Concession, in the south of the Okavango – one of the prettiest areas in the Okavango, with quintessential Okavango landscapes. From glistening waterways to open floodplains and tall palm trees, this is a pretty area with varied wildlife and wonderful birding. The camp prides itself on its eco friendly approach to solar and waste disposal.

With access predominantly by using Moremi Crossing’s private airstrip guests are able to gain an understanding of the scale of the Okavango Delta as they fly in.
