Walking Safaris

A special perspective of the delta

For those wishing for an intensely personal experience in the Okavango Delta walking safaris offer a unique way of exploring the delta. Whilst most camps outside the National Parks and Game Reserves allow walking safaris a number of operators have specialist walking programmes.

Operating out of authentic safari camps these specialist programmes allow a special perspective of the delta and are ideal for family or small groups of friends. Walking in the wilderness is a highlight of a ‘true’ safari experience. No special training is required as the focus is on exploration and discovery with fresh spoor tracked each morning.

The emphasis is on guided walks which allow guests to focus on learning how to track wildlife and understand animal movement, patterns and behaviour. Being on foot rather than in a vehicle allows guests to gain in-depth information on trees, grasses and the finer details.

Although the focus at these camps is on the walking experience, other activities, such as game drives and mokoro excursions are offered to supplement the walking.

These are the original ‘Africa under canvas’ safaris.

Footsteps Across the Delta

Footsteps Across the Delta

One of the most highly regarded walking safaris in the Okavango Delta this programme allows guests to experience the original ‘African Safari under canvas’ with an emphasis on exploring the Okavango Delta as the first African explorers did – either by Mekoro or on foot. At ground level the variety of habitats, riverine forest, palm islands, permanent swamps and dry sandveld offer an outstanding safari experience.

Occupying a comfortable camp within the private Shinde concession which accommodates up to 6 guests in three specially designed twin-bedded tents with sewn-in floors, each tent has its own bucket shower and bush toilet, and even a daily laundry service.

Availability of other activities varies throughout the year and includes early morning or late afternoon game-drives, Mekoro or fishing trips. The Footsteps Across The Delta walking experience also combines well with the luxuries offered by the other Ker & Downey Botswana camps Shinde, Okuti or Kanana.

The emphasis is on guided walks which allows a unique perspective: track wildlife; understand animal movement, patterns and behaviour; appreciate in depth information about trees, grasses and the finer details. The camp is also the base for Ker & Downey Botswana’s Young Explorers Delta Programme, a family safari led by a specialist guide that tailors the safari to suit children as young as 7 years old.
