Vumbura Plains Camp
Kwedi Concession, northern Okavango Delta
With fourteen rooms, Vumbura Plains Camp is split into two camps. The camp is contemporary in design with rooms situated on raised wooden decks which are connected by wooden walkways. These luxurious rooms have iconic views of the floodplains from the expansive lounge area which is open on three sides.
Rooms have both an indoor and outdoor shower and an en-suite bathroom. Additionally the rooms have a private plunge pool and relaxing ‘sala’ from where the passing wildlife can be watched as you indulge in a soothing massage.
The two camps of Vumbura Plains Camp each have a sumptuous raised lounge, dining and bar area which afford magnificent views across the iconic Okavango Delta along with an expansive deck protruding into the floodplain. This provides an ideal setting for for star-gazing or simply sitting by the camp fire.
Vumbura Plains Camp is situated in the northern reaches of the Okavango Delta and shares the private Kwedi Concession with its sister camp, Little Vumbura. The Kwedi Concession comprises 90 000 hectares (220 000 acres). Vegetation in this area of the Delta is varied and ranges from open floodplains to dense mopane woodland; such variety results in spectacular game viewing and all year birding opportunities. The permanent swamp and island habitats feature beautiful islands and permanent waterways; these are created by the combined effect of local summer rains and the annual winter floodwaters of the Okavango Delta.
The camp is surrounded by grasslands, referred to locally as ‘melapo’, which are flooded each year by the waters of the Okavango and which offer good seasonal game viewing. Species seen regularly include elephant, giraffe, impala, sable antelope, kudu, zebra, common waterbuck and reedbuck, tsessebe, wildebeest, red lechwe and Cape buffalo. Predators which guests might have the chance to encounter include the African wild dog, several resident prides of lion, as well as leopard, cheetah and African wildcat. The waterways are home to Hippo and crocodile. Game drives within the concession are incredibly productive and guests often see a range of wildlife on their first game on the trip from airstrip to Vumbura Plains Camp.
