DumaTau

DumaTau is a top luxury camp with a spectacular setting on the magnificent Osprey lagoon in the remote wilds of northern of Botswana. It has a prime location to experience the famous elephant mega herds and good all round game too. Following an extensive rebuild in 2020 Duma Tau has reopened as a premier luxury camp offering a sumptuous safari experience. The Osprey retreat features a wellness centre, gym and lap pool. Activities include game drives, walking and boating.

DumaTau means ‘lion’s roar’ and there is a good prevalence of predators in the camp’s private reserve. The private concession is a varied landscape encompassing the Linyanti swamps, the Savute channel, woodland and savannah. It has a prime location, being on the floodplain of the Linyanti River ensures very productive game viewing.

The concession’s 100,000 hectares (300,000 acres) is shared between only four camps: King’s Pool, Savuti and Linyanti Tented Camp. Game viewing here is best during the dry season when high concentrations of wildlife at the lagoon and Linyanti river can be relied upon. The camp is situated between two important elephant corridors and so the area is a beacon of elephant research and conservation.

The new camp retains the ‘off the beaten track’ feel which guests loved so much and it is till only a thin canvas between you and the African bush. The upgrade brings a fresh face to the much loved old camp. It has a modern style with sleek modern lines and a sophisticated look.

The iconic floating fire deck, extending pier-like right out into the lily peppered waters, remains. There is no better way to end a day on safari than suspended over the lagoon, the waters sparkling below the spectacular skies, listening to a symphony of bell frogs and honking hippos.

The main dining and lounge areas make the most of the lagoon-side scenery and the 12 metre lap pool will extend right into the Osprey lagoon, with poolside day beds on a raised platform shaded by a roof structure. There is a deli for snacks and drinks and a trading store. The main area features a fire pit and a ‘curiosity room’ where guests can explore wildlife research and interesting materials. The flagship Osprey ‘wellness centre’ and gym will be shared with sister camp Little DumaTau.

The rooms are incredibly spacious, double the size of the previous camp’s tents at 104 square metres (1500 square feet) (internal and external space). As well as a bedroom with kingsize beds each room features a separate lounge area and large bathroom with indoor and outdoor showers as well as extensive outdoor deck and private plunge pool. What better spot to watch the Linyanti’s renowned mega-herds of elephant as they wallow in the lagoon than from your private plunge pool just a stone’s throw away?

Designed with combatting the heat in mind, they include excessive overhangs for shade and cool. Innovative spot cooling technology will deposit cool air over the bed whilst still allowing gauze for air through flow. This also means the tents are not closed off and remain immersed in the sights and sounds of the African bush.

The Star Bed on the Zibadianja lagoon enables guests the extraordinary experience of sleeping out under the expanse of the Botswana skies in luxury whilst immersed in the sounds of the African night.

DumaTau runs 100% off solar power with a 230kvA solar.
