If you are looking for old-world, authentic and pared down luxury evoking the first days of safari in the 1930s, Camp Maru captures that spirit. The camp has only six tents and a maximum of twelve guests and offers intimacy and exclusivity in classic, comfortable canvas tents shaded by a grove of magnificent leadwood trees. Camp Maru is located at the edge of a permanent lagoon is a magnet for bird and wildlife.
Camp Maru is a new offering (opened September 2019) that is quite distinct from many of the longer established Delta camps. Camp Maru is unpretentious and simple but luxurious with the romance of a safari of the early nineteenth century. The philosophy of Camp Maru is ‘touching the earth lightly’ and the camp harmonises with its surroundings.
The rooms are canvas and pitched, with wide overhangs to keep the interior cool and to shade the private veranda area. Every room’s veranda faces onto the lagoon where you can enjoy a drink, take in the pristine surroundings and watch the wetland wildlife from the comfortable chairs.
Each tent has an en suite bathroom with a basin, flush lavatory and hot water shower. The beds are either extra length king size or can be made up as two three-quarter length twins. The rooms are supplied with luxury toiletries and high quality linens and towels and also have power points and standing fans. The main area or ‘Map Room’ is also under canvas and has a library well stocked with fascinating books on the flora and fauna of the Delta. The swimming pool and sun loungers look over the lagoon. Sit by the firepit after dark for the campfire under the stars experience.
This private concession is part of NG32 which is 1500 square miles of community controlled land in the very south of the Delta bordering the Moremi Game Reserve and to the south of Chitabe. As this is a community concession, Camp Maru is involved in various community upliftment projects. Although the camp lies on a channel with permanent water, the location in the extreme south of the Delta means that the water from the annual flood reaches here last. This results in an area of varied habitats: in addition to the permanent water and palm treed islands there are also large areas of floodplains that are often dry. In those dry areas lion concentrations are high, wild dog are seen particularly in October/ November and cheetah frequent the plains. The lagoon itself is fringed with papyrus, is home to hippos and also attracts a multitude of birdlife.
Game drives at Camp Maru are shared in a six person vehicle (although private game drives are available at extra cost) and mokoro trips are offered as are bush walks. The camp is fully powered by renewable energy from its solar farm. Wifi is available in the main areas. There is no telephone reception but the camp has a satellite phone in case of emergency. There is a daily laundry service. Children are welcome from 12 years.
Camp Maru is only 80 km from Maun, allowing transfer by game drive vehicle or helicopter. Transfer by land is approximately 2.5 hours at a cost of $100 each way and by helicopter is about 23 minutes costing $200 each way.
