Okavango Horse Safaris – Mokolowane Camp

,

Set on a private concession in the pretty western corner of the Okavango, Mokolowane Camp lies on the Matsebi River and consists of five tree houses. It is a simple and charming camp reached by a full day ride from Okavango horse Safari’s main camp, Kujwana. The focus is horse riding but other activities are offered.

Okavango Horse Safaris established the first riding safaris in the Okavango Delta and continue to run one of the best horse safaris in Africa. PJ and Barney Bestelink set up OHS in 1986 and still own and run the company providing authentic riding adventures through the Okavango. Days are usually spent exploring on horseback with other activities like game drives and boating offered to enrichen the Okavango safari experience. Mokolowane is the second smaller camp of the OHS collection and features charming treehouse chalets.

Itineraries are built around a 5, 7 or 10 nights with fixed departure dates on Saturdays and Tuesdays, using a combination of the Okavango Horse Safaris camps. All safaris start at Kujwana the main camp, and only those on the 7 or 10 night safaris will visit Mokolowane, which is reached by a full day ride.

Setting off north west of the main camp, guests will enjoy a full day ride (roughly 6 hours in the saddle) with a lunch stop and rest in the middle of the day to avoid the worst of the heat, arriving for refreshing sundowners in camp. Riding between the camps offers guests the chance to safari deeper into this stunning wilderness. After all, ‘safari’ means journey, and to journey by horseback between each camp is the ultimate safari.

Mokolowane is the second camp (known as ‘Mok’). It is slightly smaller with just 5 rooms. This is a simple but delightful little camp, set on the Matsebi River. The treehouses create it a very special atmosphere, with each of the five rooms set 2 metres high into the trees offering wonderful views of the Okavango and creating a very intimate treehouse feel. Each of the rooms has a private en-suite bathroom with hot bucket showers.

For those on 7 night itineraries with Okavango Horse Safaris, guests will stay 2 nights at Mokolowane before returning to the main camp. Those on 10 night safaris will depart Mokolowane for the fly camp. Please see our itineraries for more information.

Okavango Horse Safaris is based in a private concession of over 2500 sq kilometres which spreads across three river systems – the Xudum, the Kiri and the Matsibie – providing an excellent insight into the Okavango Delta animals, birds and their habitat.
