Qorokwe Camp

Qorokwe camp is a striking and contemporary styled luxury camp set in a prime location, on a private concession in the game rich southern reaches of the Okavango Delta. Wildlife is rich and varied here, with particularly good predator sightings. The eight large and comfortable suites each feature private pools and have been designed to maximise the impact of the Delta vistas. Sleek, minimalist water features mirror the water of the lagoon.

Qorokwe camp in the south-eastern Okavango Delta opened in December 2017. The exclusive Qorokwe concession (26 180 hectares or 64 000 acres), previously unutilised for more than four years, reveals a world of diverse Delta habitats, from scattered acacia woodlands with herds of giraffe, zebra and abundant plains game to pristine floodplains, home to curious red lechwe and gnarled buffalo bulls. Then there’s the local lion pride, as well as large number of elephant – all a feature of this classic Okavango Delta setting.

Qorokwe means ‘The place where the buffalo broke through the bush into the water’. A suitable name for a lodge located between two permanent rivers visited by buffalo which love the shallow river channels. And where there are buffalo there are inevitably lion, buffalo being their favourite meal!

Qorokwe Camp consists of eight tented suites and one spacious family tented suite with its own splash pool and large deck. En suite facilities feature a shower with a glass door which slides back to transform it from an indoor to an outdoor shower, double basins and a free standing bath.

The magnificent main area at Qorokwe Camp overlooks a productive lagoon and the dining area, lounge, library and bar are built on raised wooden platforms, connected by walkways. The camp marries minimalist clean lines and a stylish contemporary aesthetic with a real connection with the natural world. The rooms and main areas are modernist: flat roofed with wood panels, wrought iron and geometric shapes and large sliding doors that welcome in and frame the magnificent wilderness of the Delta. Traditional touches such as woven baskets provide a connection with the ancient but still practised arts of the people of Botswana. Peaceful rectangular water features edge the lounge area and frame the view onto the lagoon. The generously sized infinity pool is set slightly lower and adjacent to the firepit.

Qorokwe is in the southernmost part of the Delta and the landscape really is diverse: game drives will take in mopane and acacia woodlands, islands with palm trees, floodplains and seasonal water. The variety of the landscape and the proximity to the Moremi Game Reserve means that the wildlife is excellent and the area is particularly rich in predator sightings. The Qorokwe concession is a private concession shared with Stanley’s camp, Baines camp and Gomoti Plains camp. However the vast area of the concession means that the tourist density is low and it’s very unlikely that you will see a vehicle from any other camp.

Guests will enjoy game drives on open 4×4 Land Cruisers to view the wealth of wildlife by day. Night game drives produce exciting nocturnal sightings of civet, genet and bushbabies, as well as owls and even leopard. Explore the waters by boat or mokoro – your guide will reveal the secrets of living in the Delta while you look out for tiny frogs and malachite kingfishers. Note that, although the lagoon on which the camp is set is permanent water, the activities on water (mokoro and boat trips) are dependent on water levels of the Santantadibe river and usually only run during the flood season from July-September.

Nature walks and birdwatching complete the viewing spectrum. Birdlife is spectacular with the rare ground hornbill and African hawk eagle in the vicinity to name just two.
