Tubu Tree Camp

Built into the trees, Tubu Tree Camp has a charming tree-house atmosphere with a series of high wooden walkways connecting the rooms and main areas, with fabulous views of the floodplains. Tube Tree is situated on the famous Jao Reserve, along the western edge of Hundu Island which offers the best game viewing on the reserve. Its excellent location allows access to both wet and dry habitats showcasing full splendour of the Okavango Delta.

Tubu Tree Camp lies on the 600km Jao reserve, just below the Okavango panhandle, a beautiful area dominated by permanent wetlands with deep water channels, seasonal floodplains and scattered islands. Tubu has easy access to Hundu Island, the largest land mass in the area which forms with the arrival of the annual floods and is home to a variety of wildlife. This ensures game drives and good game viewing can be enjoyed in the area even during the flood season, which is not possible for the other camps on the Jao reserve which are set on much smaller islands.

Classically designed, the eight tents are set on platforms overlooking the floodplain and linked by an elevated walkway through the tree canopy. Complete with en – suite bathrooms and outdoor showers, the tents encompass private decks showcasing the striking views over the floodplains. Tubu Tree Camp also offers a family unit consisting of two adjoining tents each with their own bathroom and sharing a lounge.

Shaded by a majestic marula tree, the main area is raised and incorporates a dining room and lounge area as well as a pool deck and an open bar. Two hides are found in the concession, with one of them located a short 20 minutes from camp. This hide is converted into a unique, platformed Star Bed inviting guests (maximum four guests) to revel in a genuine sleep-out experience.

Hundu Island provides Tubu Tree Camp with passage to some of the diverse habitats of the Okavango Delta. Both day and night game drives are offered and during the high flood periods motorboats and mokoros explore the delta’s waterways. These activities are based on water levels at the time of your visit. Fishing excursions are offered during the fishing season.

Tubu Tree Camp utilises 4 x 4 Land Rovers for their game drive, each accommodating a maximum of seven guests and affording each guest a seat with an uninterrupted view out of the vehicle. Complementing the morning and afternoon game drives, night drives, conducted with spotlights, give guests the opportunity to witness nocturnal animals as they move around and search for food. Aardwolf, porcupine, serval and large spotted genet all fall into this category.

The Jao flats display spectacular herds of red lechwe followed by their predators – both lion and frequently spotted leopard. Other regular sightings include Hippo and Nile crocodile, blue wildebeest, impala, tsessebe, southern giraffe, elephant, spotted-necked otter and occasionally the very shy sitatunga. The drier west harbours similar species, with greater concentrations of Burchell’s zebra and blue wildebeest.

Bird enthusiasts are treated to large concentrations of wattled crane, slaty egret, rosy-throated longclaw and African skimmer. Hunda Island provides a contrasting environment with crimson-breasted shrike and Meyer’s parrot topping off the bird list at Tubu Tree Camp.
