Christmas Safari

This six night Okavango safari combines two excellent camps set in private concessions. Kanana in the western Okavango and Shinde in the Eastern Okavango. This itinerary covers a diverse range of habitats and wildlife encounters. Both camps complement each other beautifully ensuring the most comprehensive Okavango safari experience. Importantly for this time of year, these camps offer the opportunity to enjoy land and water activities year round, making this one of the best Okavango safari itineraries at Christmas.

Beginning at Kanana Camp, in the west of the Okavango on the private Pom Pom concession, you will enjoy the full range of activities available to private concessions- game drives, off-roading, night drives, walking, mokoro and boating. This is a particularly pretty area of the Okavango with a string of islands and floodplains. Leopards are frequently found here, along with huge breeding herds of elephants and superb birding.

For your second camp you fly east to the private Shinde concession where you will stay at Shinde Camp. Another full range of activities are available to enjoy here. The game is wonderfully varied, large bull elephants roam the plains between impressive and varied herds of antelope. Lions are frequently seen and even cheetah and wild dog.

Both camps are operated by Ker & Downey Botswana, known for their small intimate camps and prime locations. Importantly, they have a maximum of only 4 people per vehicle ensuring a very exclusive safari experience. Expect a high standard of guiding and service throughout.

This is the complete Okavango Delta safari providing the opportunity to experience the delta by land and water year round.

Day 1 - Kanana Camp

On arrival in Maun, Botswana you will be met by a representative to assist you with your connection on to a light charter flight to Kanana, a short flight of about 20 minutes. Your guide will be waiting on arrival and will transfer your to camp, a game drive of about 25 minutes, depending on sightings along the way.

After some refreshments and having been introduced to the camp and team your guide will discuss the environment around Kanana and the activities available - morning, afternoon and evening game drives, walking, boating and mokoro rides. As you talk about your particular interests you will begin to discuss your activities for the days ahead – your guide will help you ensure you make the most of your time at Kanana. After tea and cake you head out on your first afternoon activity, perhaps a game drive or a boat safari along the river. Toasting the sunset you return to camp for dinner and your first night in the Okavango.

The next morning you wake early with your choice of hot drink delivered to your tent, followed by a light breakfast. This is your first full day at Kanana and offers you the chance to explore the concession with game drives or some of the other wonderful activities.

Setting off straight after breakfast to catch the best of the game viewing while the predators are still active you will search for signs of the events from the night before. Game drives usually last around 4 hours, returning for a hearty brunch followed by a siesta for a few hours. A chance to enjoy your beautiful rooms with private deck or swim in the pool. Meeting again for tea you then set out on your afternoon activity. Stopping of sundowners as the sun sinks below the horizon and the nocturnal animals begin to stir you will then start your return to camp with a spot light – look out for cats as they begin their hunting and those smaller nocturnal animals which we rarely see without the spotlight like genet, bush babies and caracals.

The next day is your second full day in Kanana and offers you the chance to explore deeper into the concession with game drives or some of the other wonderful activities.
