Okavango Wilderness Short Safari

One of the Okavango Delta’s best and most popular camps is the basis of this short safari. With a prime location on a small island in a game rich private concession, Little Vumbura is a superb choice for those short on time looking for a quintessential Okavango experience. With year round water safari activities as well as excellent game drive opportunities, this is a fantastic choice at any time of year. A classic luxury tented camp with a down to earth and friendly atmosphere, you will immediately feel at home in this delightful gem of a camp.

Being set on a private concession allows greater freedom of activities- Little Vumbura offers a full range of experiences with morning, afternoon and evening game drives, off-roading, walking, mokoro, boating and fishing (mainly tilapia and tiger fish). Scenic helicopter flights can also be arranged and are highly recommended (booked at an additional cost).

Surrounded as it is by water and lying close to large rivers, water-based activities are a highlight here. Mokoro rides see you gliding through the floodplains under the guidance of experienced polers and motor boats explore the deeper permanent channels. This is an opportunity to learn more about this unique eco-system and the lives of those who live in it. Elephant, hippo, crocdiles, red lechwe and reed buck are frequently seen on these excursions.

Game drives in open Land Rovers explore the savannah areas on the concession which is noted for its diversity and concentrations of plains game. Leopard stalk the woodland areas while cheetah are often spotted peering across the open plains. Lion and buffalo interactions are also a highlight. Walks (on request) around the island are an opportunity to enjoy Africa from a different perspective. Wildlife viewing and birding is consistently good all year round in this area.

You guide will discuss your particular interests and activity preferences and work these into your schedule across the three days.

Day 1 - Little Vumbura Camp

On arrival into Maun Airport you will be met by a representative and assisted onto your flight to Little Vumbura Camp, a flight of about 25 minutes. You guide will be waiting to meet and transfer you to camp, a short drive from the airstrip to the boat jetty, where you will take a stunning 20 minute boat ride to camp, your Okavango home for the next 3 nights.

Little Vumbura is situated on a wooded island surrounded by water. Designed to blend in with its surroundings, the camp is a beautiful six bedroomed tented camp shaded by the canopy of an ancient Okavango forest. Each tent is ensuite, large and roomy with an open-air shower and views of the surroundings. A plunge pool and reading area overlooks the floodplains and a star deck leads off the dining area.

After some refreshments and having been introduced to the camp and team you will set off on your afternoon activity, perhaps taking to the water to explore the surrounding waterways. Toasting the setting sun with a drink and some snacks you will return to camp where a roaring fire and dinner await. Over dinner you will discuss you plans for the next day with your guide, who will then escort you to your room for your first night in the Okavango.

Day 2 - Little Vumbura Camp

The next morning you wake early with your choice of hot drink delivered to your tent, followed by a light breakfast. Then you are off on your first safari activity, as agreed with your guide.

Mornings are a great time to track the movements of the night before when predators are most active, so perhaps you will head out in the 4x4 and see if you can catch some of the action before the animals retreat to the shade. Alternatively you may enjoy a guide walk in the cool of the morning, a chance to learn more about this unique and beautiful eco-system and for your guide to share his tracking skills.

After a few hours you will stop for a coffee break and some snacks and after about 4 hours you will return to camp, around 10-11am for a hearty brunch and a few hours to relax. No activities run in the heat of the day when most animals rest in the shade- as do you! A great chance to enjoy your lovely room or the common areas of the camp, like the swimming pool and lounge.

Meeting at around 3.30pm for high tea you enjoy some light refreshments and then head out on your afternoon activity- perhaps this time exploring the waterways which are truly beautiful at sunset and attract many animals who come to drink at the end of the day. This is a truly peaceful end to the day.

Over dinner in camp you will plan your final day on safari with your guide.

Day 3 - Little Vumbura Camp

The next morning it another early start, and after a quick breakfast you set off for your final full day in the Okavango. Once again you will do an early morning and late afternoon activity, with a few hours between to relax at camp.

For those interested in a scenic helicopter flight over the Okavango, this is the perfect time to do so. This is a truly amazing experience and really showcases the beautiful and diversity of the Okavango. Especially for those on shorter itineraries, a helicopter ride is a real highlight.

Day 4 - End of Safari

The time for your flight to Maun will be finalised the day before and your guide will advise you what time you will be leaving camp. Time permitting you will still enjoy a morning activity though this may be a little shorter than usual.

The flight will always be schedule to connect with any onward travel arrangements. Depending on the time of departure, as discussed with your guide, you will enjoy on final morning activity and brunch before bidding farewell to the Okavango. The flight to Maun will take approximately 25 minutes, depending on stops along the way. On arrival a representative will meet you to ensure you connect to your onward travel arrangements.
