This six-night family safari includes two nights at Savute Safari Lodge, Camp Moremi and Camp Okavango.
Day by Day Itinerary
Camp Okavango, Shinde Concession, Okavango Delta. On arrival in Maun your family will be met by Desert & Delta Safaris who will assist onto your light aircraft transfer to Camp Okavango within the beautiful permanent Okavango Delta.
Camp Okavango is situated on the remote Nxaragha Island at the heart of the permanent Okavango Delta, assures an unparalleled year-round water wilderness experience.
As part of Desert & Delta Safaris continued investment in bespoke family safaris a new family suite has been built allowing families to visit this remote part of the delta together. This suite has two bedrooms allowing parents and children their own rooms.
Camp Okavango’s main lodge features a cocktail bar, lounge and wildlife reference library. The dining room leads onto an expansive open-air patio which is perfect for brunch, afternoon tea and tranquil evenings around the fire. Other facilities include a secluded bird-viewing hide and a sun deck with plunge pool for relaxing during the sunny midday hours.
Camp Okavango accommodates just 24 guests in spacious safari suites. Each suite is individually situated on a raised teak platform, features en-suite facilities and enjoys sliding glass doors which open on to a private open air viewing deck. Suites are connected by raised walkways providing excellent views over the delta.
Water-based game-viewing activities are conducted by experienced professional guides who will expertly navigate guests through the many meandering, reed-lined waterways. Roam the vast expanses of water from the comfort of a modern motorboat or explore the intricacies of the Okavango Delta the old fashioned way, in the traditional contours of the Mokoro (canoe).
For those looking to get a little closer to nature, guided bush walks are conducted on a number of the nearby islands, offering an opportunity to track some of the larger land-based species that inhabit this water wilderness. Bird-watching opportunities are outstanding, and fishing for bream and tiger fish is also offered as an activity.
Camp Moremi, Xakanaxa, Moremi Game Reserve. During the morning you will be transferred by light aircraft transfer to Camp Moremi in the game rich Xakanaxa region of the Moremi Game Reserve.
At the point where the life-giving waters of the Okavango Delta meet the vast plains of the Kalahari Desert is a sanctuary of Mopane forests, open grasslands, seasonal floodplains and riverine habitats, resulting in one of the most magnificent and welcoming animal environments in all of Africa. Shaded from the African sun by a forest of ancient ebony trees, Camp Moremi is an elegant thatch and timber lodge consisting of an elevated main lounge, wildlife reference library, dining room and cocktail bar.
Facilities at Camp Moremi include a secluded swimming pool and sundeck, an elevated viewing platform with a breath taking panorama of Xakanaxa Lagoon, and a thatched boma where guests can enjoy brunch or afternoon tea. For an authentic and personal safari experience, Camp Moremi accommodates just 22 guests in recently updated East African-style individual safari tents, each situated on a raised teak platform with private adjacent facilities and viewing deck. All accommodation will be rebuilt in early 2017 to compliment Desert & Delta Safaris.
Camp Moremi offers a broad range of safari activities on both land and water. For many guests, the highlight of their stay comes during the morning and afternoon game drives. Conducted in open 4×4 safari vehicles, the exhilarating game drives provide the chance to track wildlife in the beautiful surroundings of Moremi Game Reserve, a protected area renowned for frequent sightings of lion, leopard and cheetah. African Wild Dog sightings are also regularly reported, an endangered species whose numbers are rapidly dwindling in other areas.
Water activities involve the exploration of the water lily-ringed Xakanaxa Lagoon and surrounding Okavango Delta channels by motorboat. The birdlife – which ranges from water birds to shy forest dwellers – is prolific and varied, and each boat trip affords guests exceptional bird-watching opportunities. Other sightings include hippos enjoying the clear, cool water, and the chance to watch big game making their way through the reeds to drink or bathe at the water’s edge.
Savute Safari Lodge, Savute, Chobe National Park. You will be transferred by light aircraft to Savute Safari Lodge in the enigmatic Savute region of the Chobe National Park.
The winding Savute Channel stretches from the Linyanti flows past Savute Safari Lodge before forming the Savute Marsh. This mysterious and life giving channel has a fascinating history of drying and then flowing again.
The lodge comprises twin-bedded luxury double volume suites with spacious interior and large, glass sliding doors. Constructed of wood, thatch and glass these suites are ideal for the hot and dry conditions with large private viewing decks and en-suite facilities. Savute Safari Lodge accommodates 24 guests. The family suite allows families to be comfortably accommodated.
The main building is a thatch and timber structure housing a lounge, library and cocktail bar. The Savute Channel is overlooked by an expansive viewing deck, well sited for watching game at the waterhole. Meals are taken on the deck during the dry season giving guests the opportunity to see herds of elephant and other animals drinking whilst eating. The lodge’s swimming pool also overlooks the waterhole and is situated on raised wooden teak deck.
Activities are land based with game drives are conducted in open 4×4 safari vehicles in the Savute area. The area is prolific and herds of elephant, wildebeest and zebra along with lions and wild dogs are regularly seen. Game drives include visits to the miraculous Savute Marsh and to ancient San rock paintings.
