Muchenje is a charming owner-run lodge perched on the edge of an escarpment in the Chobe Forest Reserve with superb views of the floodplains. Its main draw is the peaceful location, being on the quieter western side of Chobe National Park, a huge advantage over most Kasane lodges. Muchenje is a simple and traditional lodge, a little gem, offering an affordable well located base to explore Chobe in peace with a good range of activities.

Muchenje maintains the safari feel which many of the Kasane lodges cannot, with animals roaming freely from the Chobe National Park. Muchenje offers a full range of the traditional safari activities sought in Chobe, and with Victoria Falls merely 2 hours’ drive away this is very much an option too.

Overlooking the Chobe River and a nearby popular waterhole, Muchenje’s extensive deck areas include a bush boma, a comfortable lounge area, communal dining area and a firepit perfectly located for stargazing at night once the sun has gone down. Canvas-type walls are rolled up to allow the breeze to flow freely through the main areas and an upper mezzanine level boasts a small library with a few books and board games. A sparkling swimming pool with sun loungers provides welcome respite from the midday sun.

Eleven thatched and airconditioned en- suite rooms make the most of the riverfront view and private wooden verandas, working as effective lookout points to the grazing game below, invite one to relax in the warm African sun – especially during the winter months. A mini-bar and tea and coffee stations are available in each suite for guests’ use. The family cottage is reserved for families with children suited to its additional mezzanine open plan sleeping area.

Game drives are conducted in a more peaceful corner of the Chobe Riverfront, away from the more crowded areas reached by most of the Kasane Lodges.
Early risers will relish in a 5:30am wake- up call with fresh coffee and a misty morning game drive to spot game , or for the more adventurous, a guided morning walk through the floodplains to awaken all your senses and get up close and personal with the bushveld elements and smaller animals often missed on drives. Your allocated guide will introduce guests to the ancient art of animal tracking and spoor identification. A scrumptious breakfast is served at 08:30 for those guests that wish to indulge in a morning lie-in.

Both half- day and full- day 4WD safaris are on offer, the full -day option encompassing a boat cruise from Kasane. Following a full breakfast spread, passionate Muchenje guides transport a maximum of 6 guests at a time in open -sided safari vehicles to one of the two jetties, either at Sududu or Ihaha. Taking advantage of the hours that the wildlife is most active, guests cruise in Muchenje’s private boat along the edges of the riverbanks, where buffalo and elephant can be witnessed swimming across from the mainland to Sududu Island. Pods of hippo can be seen cavorting in the water and the prolific birdlife of the Chobe area adds to the entire magical experience.

Delicious packed lunches are delved into onboard the boat and guests then enjoy an afternoon game drive along the riverfront back to the lodge in time to enjoy sundowners around the welcoming firepit before dinner is served. Private Ihaha jetty breakfasts and lunches can be arranged with prior notice. Tasty, wholesome meals created with the freshest ingredients are served on the deck or in the boma under the stars. Dietary requirements are catered for. Licensed to do night-time game drives, Muchenje gives guests the wonderful opportunity to enjoy a short drive through the Chobe Forest Reserve after dinner – a completely different bush experience. Nocturnal animals such as porcupine, hyaenas, genets and civets are spotted as they become active once the sun has disappeared and the bush lies in moonlit darkness.

Muchenje Lodge supports local villages and schools thus for longer stays a cultural visit to these sites is encouraged. Learn how to brew homemade beer as you experience the culture and traditions of the local inhabitants.
