Okavango Horse Safaris- Fly Camp

,

For the most adventurous travellers the simple fly camp on the longer itineraries with Okavango Horse Safaris provides the ultimate authentic safari experience. Visited for a couple of nights as part of the 10 night riding safari, this is a very rustic but comfortable camp set up especially for your visit. Visited between stops at the permanent camps, this unique experience of sleeping under the stars is sure to leave you with memories for life.

A fly camp is a mobile camp, set up for short stays on specific journeys, and easily dismantled. It refers to the days when you moved your fly sheet rather than a entire tent. Nothing captures the true pioneering spirit of safari quite like a mobile or fly camp experience. The fly camping is only included on longer safaris by Okavango Horse Safaris of 10 nights or more and follows stays at Kujwana Camp to Mokolowane Camp, their permanent camps on the concession.

Okavango Horse Safaris (‘OHS’) established the first riding safaris in the Okavango and continue to run one of the best horse safaris in Africa. PJ and Barney Bestelink set up OHS in 1986 and still own and run the company providing authentic riding adventures through the Okavango. Days are usually spent exploring on horseback with other activities like game drives and boating offered to enrichen the Okavango safari experience.

The base of the fly camp lies in the south east of the private concession in which Okavango Horse Safaris operates, in the western Okavango. This mobile camp moves with the action. Usually nestling below the canopy of towering trees by the river, this is a simple set up – roll out mattresses below mosquito nets and the stars. The set up is simple but comfortable, with side tables and solar lights provided. Bathrooms consist of washstands, bush toilets and bucket and pulley showers with hot water.

The focus is horse riding but other activities are offered especially where non-riders are accompanying the safari. Itineraries are built around a 5, 7 or 10 nights with fixed departure dates on Saturdays and Tuesdays, using a combination of camps. All safaris start at Kujwana the main camp, and only those on the 10 night safaris will visit the fly camp. Please see our itineraries for more information.

Okavango Horse Safaris is based in a private concession of over 2500 sq kilometres which spreads across three river systems – the Xudum, the Kiri and the Matsibie – providing an excellent insight into the Okavango Delta animals, birds and their habitat.
