Kwara Camp

Set in one of Botswana’s prime concessions, Kwara camp is located in the vast Kwara concession on the north eastern edge of the Okavango Delta. This area boasts year round water and superb game viewing. The massive 175,000 hectares is shared with only three camps, ensuring a highly exclusive safari. The concession shares a 30km water border with the iconic Moremi Game Reserve and benefits from the flow of wildlife between these areas.

Kwara is a smart and luxurious camp set on an island in a seasonal lagoon under the shade of towering ebony and mangosteen trees with pleasant views of the floodplains. Importantly, Kwara is situated in an area of permanent water ensuring land and water activities are offered all year round, a huge advantage over many camps. The views over the lagoon will offer sightings of hippo and perhaps lechwe and certainly great birdlife even before leaving camp.

The surroundings are beautiful and varied ensuring a range of habitats and interesting game viewing. The papyrus edged permanent water channels in the south of the Kwara concession contrast interestingly with the mopane forests and extensive dry savannah to the north of the concession providing a full and varied safari experience. The area is well known for consistently good game viewing, especially predators – lion, leopard, cheetah and wild dog are seen regularly. Elephant are common, as are large numbers of zebra, giraffe and many species of antelope such as lechwe, impala and the elusive sitatunga are all also sighted in the area.

Kwara offers five activities all year, with no seasonal restrictions: walking safaris, game drives morning, afternoon and night, boat and mokoro (dug-out canoe) trips and also fishing (during the permitted season of March to December inclusive; fishing is banned in January and February). Spinning equipment is provided but fly fishers need to bring their own equipment.

Game drive vehicles are able to go off road; night time game drives are also available to try to encounter elusive nocturnal species. All activities involve a tracker as well as a guide, so as to maximise the chances of tracking great wildlife. Kwando are one of the dew operators to offer this additional service and it certainly pays off as the sightings report will attest.

The boat experience is on a double decker (giving views over the papyrus) which takes guests to the Godikwe lagoon in the waters of the Moremi Game Reserve. The lagoon abounds with birdlife especially in the breeding season where you will see a heronry teeming with nesting birds. Mokoro trips take place along the shallows of the lagoon by camp, a peaceful experience enabling close views of birds and aquatic plant life. Walking safaris will often be offered on an island opposite in combination with the mokoro trip.

Kwara camp closed on 1 June 2018 for a full rebuild and reopened on 1 September 2019 on the same site. The new camp is larger and more luxurious with nine tents which designed in Kwando’s signature ‘authentic African’ style. The tents are canvas, and each has a deck with a superb view over the lagoon, ensuite bathroom, indoor and outdoor shower and bath with a view over the floodplains. The rooms all have a ceiling fan and mosquito nets to surround the beds.

The communal area is situated in the centre of the camp and consists of dining area, lounge, curio shop and there are two small swimming pools with loungers and small bar, one at either end of camp.

Kwando operates a digital detox experience meaning that there is no wifi or cell phone connectivity so that guests truly immerse themselves in the natural setting of the camp. The minimum age for guests is eighteen years and there are no family rooms. In addition, a stay at Kwara camp must be booked for a minimum of three nights.
