Solely land focused safaris

With its crystal clear streams one can often forget that the Okavango Delta is not just about aquatic life. The fertile floodplains and islands of the delta is home to some of the best game viewing in Africa. Plains animals are drawn to the delta’s life giving waters and rich grasslands, closely followed by predators. Activities at land focused camps and lodges are primarily vehicle borne, with some walking permitted in the private concessions.

Chitabe Concession, southern Okavango Delta

In the south east of the delta, the private Chitabe Concession is diverse with floodplains, marsh and rich grasslands interspersed with acacia, mopane and riverine forest. This diversity is reflected in the concession’s animals in particular its predators. Chitabe Camp is operated by Wilderness Safaris and provides a superb base from which to explore this fascinating area.

Khwai River Lodge

Khwai Concession, eastern Okavango Delta

Overlooking the fertile floodplains of the Moremi Game Reserve Belmond Safaris’ Khwai River Lodge provides an authentic tented safari experience. Benefiting from it’s location in the community run Khwai Concession the lodge is able to operate game activities both within the concession and Moremi Game Reserve, thus able to offer walking safaris and evening game drives.

Duba Expedition Camp

Duba Concession, northern Okavango Delta

Originally a research camp, Duba Expedition Camp overlooks a pristine lagoon deep in the northern reaches of the Okavango Delta. Known particularly for its lions, the Duba Concession offers a diverse game viewing experience with large concentrations of game year round. Activities are primarily land focused with early morning and afternoon/evening game drives. Boating is seasonally available.

Chitabe Lediba Camp

Chitabe Concession, southern Okavango Delta

Perfect for small groups or families, Chitabe Lediba Camp is smaller and more intimate than its sister camp, but shares the concession’s diverse habitats and spectacular wildlife. The camp overlooks a lediba or waterhole from which it derives its name. The concession is particularly well known for its sightings of wild dog.

Little Mombo

Chief’s Island, Moremi Game Reserve

On an island, at the northern tip of Chief’s Island Little Mombo is situated within some of the best game country in Africa. The sister camp to Mombo Camp, Little Mombo provides a more intimate safari experience with just three tents, perfect for small groups or families.

Considered one of the finest safari properties in Africa, Mombo Camp is situated in a private concession within the Moremi Game Reserve. Here the rich grasslands have created a renowned safari area with abundant game and outstanding predator sightings. Mombo Camp will be rebuilt during 2016.

Primarily land focused safaris

Camps and lodges with access to either deep channels for motor boat activities or shallow waters for mokoro excursions will generally focus on land based activities but will offer water activities as well. These water activities provide excellent variety and allow guests to experience the delta more widely.

Okuti Camp

In the game rich Xakanaxa region of the Moremi Game Reserve, Okuti Camp is situated on the banks of the Maunachira River just before it flows into the Xakanaxa Lagoon. With excellent game viewing, Okuti Camp’s location also allows the waters of the delta to be explored by motorboat allowing the regions spectacular birdlife to be discovered.

Xakanaxa, Moremi Game Reserve

Overlooking the Xakanaxa Lagoon, Camp Moremi is able to fuse superb game viewing within the Xakanaxa region of the Moremi Game Reserve with excellent motorboat excursions which explore the delta. With its iconic ‘tree house’ Camp Moremi remains an authentic tented camp.

Although Chief’s Camp shares Chief’s Island with Mombo Camp and Little Mombo it is located to the south of this fabulous concession. Known primarily for its big game sightings the camp offers both game drives and access to water for mokoro excursions. Chief’s Camp is currently being rebuilt and will open again in June 2016.
